Lynley was the daughter of an Irish father and an Irish father and a New England mother. Following her first professional venture as an actor, she later became a model for children. She won the Theatre World Award in 1956-57 for her role in The Potting Shed. Lynley began her career in film in the year 1958 by appearing in her debut in the Disney film The Light in the Forest. It was followed by Holiday for Lovers (1959) and Blue Denim (1959). In 1959 she was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer Female for the film The Light in the Forest. In the following year she was again nominated for the Golden Globe Award as Most Promising Female Newcomer Female.
