Allison Stokke and Alyce Caron
Allison Stokke, born in Newport Beach California on 22 March 1989, is among America's most renowned and richest Pole Vaulters. An image of her at a 17-year-old track meet went viral in 2007 and led her to become an Olympic pole vaulter. Instagram and Twitter has helped her grow an enormous social following. She is a track & field star like Jessica Ennis Hill. According to the Los Angeles Times, among other publications, noted that Stokke had not sought or sought such attention. Brett Hutchins and David Rowe in Technology Power and Culture in the Network Society contrasted Stokke's situation with those of American women athletes in soccer, Alex Morgan and Hope Solo. The authors said that their achievements in sports were tarnished by the fetishization and sexualization of their image. Stokke's comments on social media are often insulting and attributed the sexualization of the situation to the women. Many others made parallels to Brandi Chastain's celebration after her victory at the 1999 FIFA World Cup Women's Final with her sports bra where women's sporting moments were overshadowed by discussion about their appearance. Stokke was photographed by a reporter in New York by a Californian reporter for an event and track online website in the early part of 2007. With Leather, a popular sports website that attracts many male readers and re-posted the image in May, under the heading Pole Vaulting Is Sexy Barely legal. Stokke threatened to sue the owner of the website Matt Ufford if he did remove the photo and the story has already garnered a significant amount of attention and been posted at numerous other sites. A tribute website to Stokke quickly appeared with pictures of her participating in the pole vault, and following the spread of these photos on social media websites, fan groups attracted many thousands of fans.
